The Struggle Towards Spiritual Maturity

Rev. Anita J. Gould led a Bible Study at Reid Temple A.M.E. entitled "The Struggle towards Spiritual Maturity." In this Bible Study she listed six growth stumpers that will delay our growth in the Lord.

Independence acting presumptuously, apart from God's leadership.

Impatience failing to wait on the Lord for direction.

Ignorance moving without knowledge of what God wants.

Illegality acting contrary to God's command.

Impulsivity doing what YOU want; driven by ego, not submission

Insensitivity paying no attention to God's instruction.

I know everybody thinks it's cool to be "Ms. Independent" these days. Make sure you're being independent from the things you shouldn't rely on, but never try to be independent from God. He has given us everything we have and without Him we would be nothing. Let's not deceive ourselves by believing otherwise. Praise God for his leadership and direction.

We can not be deceived into these growth stumpers. Spiritual maturity is not about knowing it all or beings without fault. True spiritual maturity comes from obedience and faithfulness. In this walk of life, let's remain faithful to God's direction. If you are ever unsure of what God's instruction is, ask Him and search through the word for what He's already commanded of you. (James 1:22 "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.") Still unsure? Wait on the Lord. It's easy to grow impatient and try and decide things on our own, but we have to trust that God loves us enough to see us through.

Most importantly, there is no "age limit" in the Lord. It's not like once we grow to a certain maturity we can stop and get comfortable. We can always submit ourselves more to God's instruction and we can always grow closer to Him so that we can hear His instruction clearer. Continue to grow in the Lord, and if you lack the fervor, remember that when people witness your spiritual maturity, it inspires them to grow as well.

With Love,
